You might be asking what is sport climbing and how is it different from traditional rock climbing? Sport climbing is a relatively safe form of rock climbing as it involves pre-placed bolted anchors in the rock. This relative safety allows the climber to push the boundaries of their physical and technical ability, often achieving goals that on the first try seemed impossible.

People of all ages, genders, backgrounds and abilities can enjoy sport climbing in the UK. You don’t have to be an athletic superhero who can do 100s of pull-ups, in fact you don’t have to be able to do any pull ups at all! Why not give it a go, you might even enjoy it!

  • first outdoor climbs!
  • Using a Clipstick
  • practicing threading the lower off anchors
  • Clipping practice on a top rope

Why come to the Dales:
The Yorkshire Dales offers some of the UK, and even the world’s best venues for sport climbing.

  • Malham Cove, the huge amphitheatre with some of the hardest sport routes in the country. The cove is also a SSSI
  • Gordale Scar, an impressive gorge with towering cliffs and a waterfall at it’s heart. Classic hard overhanging sport routes line the gorge.
  • Kilnesy Crag, famous for it’s huge overhanging profile dominating Wharfedale. Routes ranging from f6c to f9a can be found.
  • Situated in the Ribble Valley there are also some excellent low to mid. grade sports routes at Giggleswick North & South crags, Robin Proctor’s Scar. A bit further afield in Malham Dale are High & Low Stoney Bank crags.

Whatever your level the Dales offers some of the UK’s best sport climbing.
